Google, Apple, Facebook & Twitter

Google is a very respected company based on search based advertising company & have lot’s of successful products such as Gmail, Youtube, Google Map and Andriod.

They do have many others interesting innovation at Google Labs that have some high & lows of Internet technology that includes Google Wave & Buzz.

However, innovations or inventions is always a long struggle of try and error! Recently they released HotPot which allows anyone to rate almost anything in the location you seek!! OMG This is excellent!

You can’t rate the same item twice as it’s tied to your google account but you can always revise your review & ratings over time! :D

This service is available in Android mobile platform but I do hope they can release it on the iOS platform as well! :D

Another latest Google related release is for the ladies of the world!! Here’s boutiques.com, this Google shopping for the females fashion clothes & accessories is going to be a great way to shop online via Google.

My complaints is there are no products for the guys!! >_<

Apple latest installment is finally getting "Beatles" on iTunes, new updates to iTunes & Mac OSX and currently everything still very very secretive about when the next iOS 4.2 is going to be released.

iOS 4.2 is suppose to finally un-fragment the iOS versions between the iPad, iPhone & iPodTouch which will finally release the burden for developers to release applications with a standardize operating system.

The question is why there's 2 Gold master version for iOS 4.2, the speculation is that they are trying to add in last minute changes to remove the jail break hole(s).

The "orientation lock" changing to mute switch is basically to make it "standardize" with the iPhone however I do hope Apple can make a option for both iPhone & iPad to change the function of the "mute switch" to "orientation lock" and back.

The other silent release is small amendments in iTunes Ping! to allow user to share your Ping! activity to Twitter!

This means Apple had given up on creating a new social network and instead created a music “network” only to showcase music and found out there are not much “social” features.

Apple maybe are trying to have a closed wall garden on their first social network and will not allow SPAM or nonsenses conversational threads but most social networks don’t closed off those but allow users to control who they follow or friend with and set their privacy according to their liking.

I wish Apple can create a new way of doing social network that can suddenly trump both facebook & twitter at the same time that don’t just deals with music but EVERYTHING else.

Facebook just releases a “@facebook.com” messaging services which I personally haven’t tried yet but thinking that it will be “different” from normal email services does scare me a bit.

Email to me is usually separated with social networking as it’s usually use for personal & work and it’s already overloaded by SPAM advertisement by unknown marketers online.

Of course, there will be SPAM filter or “Privacy” controls but will user prefer it more than Gmail?

I had abandoned many email accounts due to the fact that the new email have better features such as bigger email storage, fast web based access, great SPAM filters and more but will I abandon it to new facebook email?

I am not sure, most likely I will get a facebook email but forward the email back to my gmail because maybe it does not have some features that Gmail already have.

Twitter’s Official Analytics Product is coming out soon at end of 2010 which will give you a way to find out about which tweets are most successful, which tweets caused people to unfollow, and who the most influential users are that reply and retweet their messages.

This analytic can finally be used by millions of people to find many statistic that can benefit not just individuals to find influential friends, but also for businesses to find what’s trending & who are the ones that can potentially help them with branding & marketing via twitter.

This might just be the money spinner for Twitter but by how much I am not sure.

Twitter should take the Google Deal

According to Business Insiders:

Facebook is emerging as a serious threat to Google’s core business, and Twitter is the only “social” company Google can buy that might have a chance of combating this.

Twitter should take the $4 billion USD Google offer!!!!

Let’s list the reasons why

  1. Twitter needs a platform as robust as Google Search to display relevant real time twitter results with advertisement!
  2. Google needs a successful social network to display real time search results based on events happening now!
  3. Google MAY be able to recreate another social network with similar or better features in a short time if needed
  4. Twitter MAY get serious competition from other social networks like facebook as facebook employs more twitter like features.
  5. Twitter MAY comes out with their own search but will never be as relevant as Google indexed search with proper algorithm for better results but may be good for real time news results but may never be as profitable without a proper way to monetize the result page properly
  6. If twitter is integrated into google search result, Google shall have the ultimate source of information gathering center for real time & indexed information online! With a new algorithm of most “shared” sorting probably give both twitter & Google the edge against facebook

This is a win win situation for twitter but maybe twitter is waiting for something, maybe even a bigger price tag?

The situation is will Google offer more money for twitter or make one themselves? Twitter is popular as it revolutionize news aggregation, communications, social networking and more using just the 140 characters words with good & SIMPLE privacy controls but it still lacks other things that makes facebook a tough competitor.

It lacks

  1. Automatic shorten URL
  2. In-line image/video preview thumbnail
  3. URL “voting”, “like”, “digg” number in URL mouse-over highlight
  4. Youtube like “search options” to sort search results
  5. “Reply to all” option (for easier #followfriday #FF)
  6. Cross platform emotion icons (Similar to emoji icons)
  7. Real human trends that totally eliminate API auto generated bots tweets
  8. Better ranking system based on influence level and not quantity of followers
  9. I can think of a lot more…if I can sit down with twitter OR Google and brain storm

Google vs Facebook?

According to TheRegister:

Google is now telling anyone stupid enough to import Gmail contacts into Facebook to reconsider such a foolish move because it’s a “trap”.

The two companies have been angrily shaking handbags at each other over the past few days in a public protest over who has the best data mine on the interwebs.

My personal opinion is both companies are like a bunch of kids trying to disturb each other in the “dinner” table of the world wide web.

Facebook does brings lot’s of referral traffic to websites due to the very nature of sharing links, images, videos and more while Google dominated the search results that brings relevant contents when in doubt.

Both are almost as essential as the other hence there should be no competition here however, there MAYBE some other social networks or search engines that have better algorithm for serving information that we all desired creeping out in the surface while the giants fights each other.

Blekko started off quietly recently with innovative slash tag socially influenced search engine!!

blekko: how to slash the web from blekko on Vimeo.

There is also a brand new social network based web browser based on chrome engine call “Rockmelt“. (cool!!)

While Facebook is facing more privacy concern and too much peer pressure types of “friends of friends” snooping & advertising.

There is always twitter & other social networking will pop out to quickly replace facebook within a short period of time.

To me, social network can change over time as long as I loses control of my social network, I will slowly reduce activities in that site and post only simple links instead of using it extensively as communication tool.

However, if I have full control of my social network privacy & no peer pressure of adding more strangers that my friends know….it will be a much better social network.

Google Buzz & Wave fail because the problem of email integration, it’s something like pulling all the email addresses (including boss, colleagues, gaming buddies, movie buddies, prospective companies HR guys that you send resume to, family members and millions of spammers) into a single social network.

That constitute a severe breach of privacy violation which immediately cause a uproar and dumped by almost everyone.

While I still love google Gmail and Google doc and some of google products but email contacts are as private as mobile numbers and it’s should remain private & confidential.

All social network should use USERNAME instead of email as public identification so that no strangers can spam you with useless jokes & want to give me millions of dollars that I had won in some phantom lottery.

While email is only for registration only not to crawl for contacts to add automatically into the social network.

Recently, iPhone app Kik Messenger did that and had to publicly apologize to the violation of our privacy.

In a couple of years into the future, we might be laughing at this article about facebook vs google, just like we laugh at AltaVista vs friendsters now.

Hopefully both companies can focus in designing new innovative ways to improve on the user experiences instead of fighting each other.

Let’s there be peace! :D
