Cyborg Girl – Japan answer to Titanic

I recently just saw this 2 hour long scifi romantic Japanese movie called Cyborg Girl.

Sometimes the greatest love stories aren’t the ones that end happily ever after, but the realization that it’s all a matter of the quality moments spent between the lovers.

You can call me a sentimental sap, but Cyborg She does meet every single one of my expectation of what makes a palatable romantic movie, never mind sometimes dwelling on the clichéd moments, especially when the leads share great chemistry, and this being a science-fiction piece to boot too! Jiro Kitamura (Keisuke Koide) is a loner who celebrates his birthday with nobody except himself, going to the mall and picking out his own gift, before ending up at the same old restaurant for a plate of spaghetti.

It’s a routine year after year, but in 2007, he chanced upon a girl (Haruka Ayase) whom he witnessed to have shoplifted from the departmental store, and from then they spend the most amazing evening together. Yes, it’s reminiscence of Serendipity, done in the style of Kwak Jae-young, whom we know better as the writer-director of the Korean hit My Sassy Girl.

The rest of the story I won’t spoil the surprise for you as it IS THE BEST!

I’ll admit it, this is a movie which I enjoyed thoroughly, even though as you know with any movie dealing with time travel, that’ll be that bit of a paradox involved, and here it came in large doses.

I’ll advise you to accept the timeline presented for what it is, because that’s the only way, linearly, in order to enjoy any movie that has this element.

Highly recommended stuff since it’s been some time I saw a romantic movie (and a science fiction one!) that just worked.

I’ll stick my neck out to say it’ll likely be featured in my top 10 list of films for this year and I’ll put money aside for the DVD as well.

p.s. Prepare some tissue…no …lot’s of tissue to wipe the tears!

2012 (2009) Ultimate Movie Review

Yes, the ultimate disaster movie is on the movie screen in Singapore today! Yes! I managed to book the ticket early at a later time of 9.45pm on a Thursday night even thou I know it’s a 2 hours & 30+ minutes movie. It’s worth EVERY PENNY that I had paid for the extra $1 online booking fees, the $17 taxi ride home and the $4.5 PC lan game I played while waiting 2 hours for the movie to start. Not to mention the popcorn & lemon tea combo & the KFC dinner that I could have avoided for a cheap meal.

Eagerly I waited outside the theater 15 minutes before the theater 3 was ready for us to enter and I can see lot’s of people holding on to their tickets with fire in their eyes almost wanting to peel the skin of the guy guarding the entrance. (A scene hard to forget too)

The moment the theater 3 light flashed we rushed towards the poor guy with outstretched hand to “tear the tickets” and rushed into the entrance like mad.

Strangely the popcorn booth is inside the entrance and I managed to buy the popcorn (sweet) combo & a non-fizzy drink and enter the theater by then is almost half filled.

I placed my popcorn & drinks onto my seat L10 and proceed quickly to the toilet in the theater knowing it will be a LONG movie and need to relieve myself before the start of the movie.

The movie have few normal commercials but I know everyone just too happy to be inside this theater to even care about the commercials, strangely I can’t remember if there is any trailers AT ALL! I don’t remember seeing any!

hahaha It was like as thou the cinema operators knew we won’t even want to watch other movie trailers and started the crisp digital theater THX sound test with effective vibration on my legs. (Cinema at Cathay Orchard)

The movie finally started………

ONE WORD! “AWESOME!”

Here come the review, the cast are excellent…the dialogues are engaging, the acting 1st class and the effects….MAN!! The effects BLOWN ME AWAY! I seldom cry at awesomeness but this movie’s special effects just convinced my tear ducts that it’s OK to cry ….it’s the end of the world after all.

I will not go into details about the plots & what happened but I may start on the theory about the movie.

If you google the word “2012″ you might get lot’s of details that might or might not appear in the movie but as you know there are lot’s of scientific theories or even documentaries to tell us the world is about to end and it all coincides on the year 2012.

One such webby is the wikipedia which gave all details possible to form almost a “convincing truth” about our coming future.

The official movie website too is filled with all kinds of music, trailers, information and even iPhone Applications!

This movie is for the theater experience and not for the torrents, it’s best watched on high definition digital theaters with loud …I mean LOUD theaters

All I can say now is go watch it and book early since after today’s 1st wave of “enlightened” movie goers, I can safely bet tomorrow’s viewers will be snapping up the tickets way earlier with online booking!

I give this movie a 10 stars over 10 stars for entertainment, special effects, background research on this 2012 phenomenal.

Luckily this is just a movie…but what comes next in the next 3 years is up to you. Just say your prayers.

District 9 Review with no spoilers!

I had personally seen the latest blockbuster movie “District 9″ twice and I totally enjoyed it.  Some of you may not like the extreme graphic & gore that it may portray yet it is to not gore enough comparing to those torture movies like “SAW”, “Final Destination” but it does gross out some who can’t handle a little explosive action hehe.

District-9

As you know Peter Jackson is one of the producer for this movie hence the excellent special effects & SUPER REALISTIC CGI and human interaction that we saw in “Lord of the Ring” trilogy.

Neill Blomkamp directed & screen play the movie in the most original way to merge a mock-a-documentary & conventional movie to poke fun of a supposedly “real” event that had exposed the whole “truth”.

The weapons is super futuristic, realistic & ultra cool with so many variety that I can’t even put names on them, the CGI animated aliens are hard to distinguished from the real humans as the interaction between the alien and the environment are seamless & fluid.

The plot is to me the most important to the whole “incident” and I won’t spoil it for you by writing it here as it’s very important that you go into the cinema or rent it in the future without half expecting much from the movie.

It’s very interesting that they had not spent a gazillion dollars doing the marketing as most of the people I know only just found out about this movie by “word of mouth” and it had remain the “twitter trends” for some time.

The movie may start off pretty slow but it picked up the pace after that and really starts to go freaking wild!! So give it sometime for you to digest the initial part then you will be rewarded greatly hehe.

I had observed the last part of the movie the key character had hinted where some of the ideas came from which game, just listen carefully when the key actor hold out a photograph of his wife…hehehehe

If you research more on District 9 and you may find many spoilers & images that leaked out with all the surprises revealed which may spoil your movie totally so I suggest avoid watching any trailers or reading more reviews.

I rate this movie 9 out of 10 for one of the best movie I had seen in 2009, go watch it and comment!
